DFI Overclocking Competition in China, Bei Jing

DFI, together with Chinese Media Beareyes.com and GZeasy.com, organized an overclocking competition in China, Bei Jing on the 3rd of september. It attracted a huge crowd of overclockers all over China. After making it through the semi-finals which was held online, 10 top-notch overclockers all made it down to one of Bei Jing's busiest IT Mall for the final showdown.

We were very lucky to be invited to attend this exciting event. Below are some of the happenings...

We take a look at the contestants' setup.

There was a total of 4 users using dry ice cooling on the CPUs. Some even used dry ice to cool the water that is cooling the GPUs!

The Taiwan OC Team from Coolaler.com and the Hong Kong OC Team from Anti-X.org were also there with us to check out the action and do some demo at the same time.

VR-Zone's Demo


We were invited to do a live bench run with our custom-made triple head cooler which we shipped all the way from Singapore to China.

However, the cooler got stuck at the China customs and we were not able to clear it in time for the competition.

Luckily, from some friends in Beareyes.com, we got to know a hardcore Chinese overclocker Xu Gang. He and his wife are taking part in the overclocking competition and he was very very helpful. He went out of his way to make a slim GPU container immediately and he lent us his CPU and GPU containers even though he was using it for the competition.

The unique thing is we brought along a very cool Chinese KongMing Lantern:

The chinese poem written in beautiful calligraphy, celebrating the spirit of overclocking in chinese tradition!

Last Minute Setup...

Our setup consisting of a DFI Ultra D modded to SLI, AMD FX57, Gskill GH 2 x 512MB UTT memory and dual Inno3D 7800GTXes in SLI!

We very quickly set it up as the containers were shared between us and Xu Gang.

Pouring in some ethanol.... as we only had around 6 litres of LN2, we had to use dry ice on the GPUs.

Ready for action!

The weaponry: LN2 + Dry Ice!

With Visionary pouring LN2 on the CPU and Susie topping up dry ice for me on the GPUs, we rushed out a 16,000 3D Mark 05 score within the few minutes we had!

It was really exciting and fun to bench in a 3-person team, and I'm glad to say we did good for a last minuter!

The Winners...


Let's take a look at the winners of the overclocking competition.

Coming in second is Victor Wang from ShangHai!

First place is Xu Gang, the husband and wife team from Beijing! He walks away with prizes worth RMB$15,000!

We'll be conducting an interview with this unusual overclocking team so watch out for it!

As we could not realize our dream of breaking the 17K barrier in Bei Jing, we had to return to Singapore to do it!
